Goodbye Superman

So Henry Caville is leaving the role of Superman behind. That’s the rumor, anyways. This is the huge controversy going around the internet now, and with so many comic fans scrutinizing everything Marvel and DC, this could be the nail in the coffin for the DC Extended Universe. Ben Affleck has already established his intentions on not returning as Batman, so for all we know, The Batman may never happen. 

It’s no secret that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is the most successful film franchise ever, expanding to TV shows and comics (although the shows aren’t really very related to the movies, with the exception of Agents of SHIELD).

Barely any relation to the movies. Like the distant 4th cousin you forget is part of your family.

So everybody is trying to copy it. Universal failed with their attempt at a Dark Universe, Disney has put Star Wars projects on hold with the harsh criticism of Solo, and now DC, the most obvious company to want to copy Marvel’s success, has hit another hiccup in their failing attempt.

It’s not as though they’ve been doing that great with their movies anyways. Nobody celebrates DC movies the way they do with Marvel. Most of Marvel movies have been amazing. The only character with dismal films in comparison to the DC movies is Thor, but they fixed that with Ragnarok. My hope for DC movies was rising when I saw the trailer for Shazaam and for Aquaman. The first appears to be a straight comedy (like Thor: Ragnarok) and the other looks like an underwater Black Panther. I don’t think we’ll see another Justice League, which means we’ll never, ever see a GOOD Justice League movie. It might be best for DC to just make whatever movies they want to make, loosely connect them somehow, but give up on the forced team-up. Both of their attempts at this, Batman versus Superman and Justice League, did nothing for fans but disappoint.

DC Comics, the owners of the world’s first superhero, the world’s first powerless crime fighter, the inspiration for all that have come afterwards—they are trapped in Marvel’s shadow, and no matter what they come out with, no matter what films they make, they will always be compared with Marvel. But Marvel managed the impossible. They somehow figured it out, made it work, and made everybody else jealous. I just wonder how long DC is going to beat this dying horse and keep trying to replicate a far superior franchise. Nobody else can do it. Ok, maybe a few people can, but I’ll write about that later. Let’s see how Shazam and Aquaman do, but my hopes for DC movies are steadily diminishing.

Except for Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman was awesome. Good job with that one, DC… except it kind of seemed like a Captain America ripoff…

Ok, one’s got a superhero leading a ragtag team of men in WWI, the other’s got a superhero leading a ragtag team of men in WWII. Never mind. Not the same at all.
